Diffusing your curly hair can add volume and reduce frizz with the right technique. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it and can lead to more defined curls, reduced frizz, more volume at the roots, and a shiny style that will last all day. I do this out of the shower for wash and go's or I use it to refresh my curls.
Needed:
- Gel, spritz, or scrunch spray
- Clips
- Towel
- Blow Dryer
- Diffuser Attachment
- Anti-Frizz Product
- Wide Tooth Comb
- Moisturizer/Leave-In Conditioner
Defined Curls

A wash and go is just that... you wash your hair, add product to it, and go about your day. To keep curly hair simple you basically wear your own natural hair texture for the day.
- Detangle freshly washed hair in the shower with conditioner in it.
- Towel dry hair and clip it into 2-4 sections.
- Apply your hair products. I use the LOC method to apply Oil and any cream to the ends of my hair working my way up. This step seals in moisture and keeps my hair shiny and healthy.
- Next I scrunch Gel into my hair for hold and frizz control since I live in Florida and its humid outside.
- Its time to diffuse so put the blow dryer on a low speed and medium heat. You don't need that much heat and the lower the speed the more in control you are of where your hair is going.
- Start In the back or nape scooping and holding hair into place with the diffuser against your scalp. You will do this like you would scrunch your hair up to your scalp with gel or mousse in your hands only using the diffuser attachment.
- Count to 10 per chunk of hair and work your way around your head.
- Fluff to style at the end and slick down your edges if you want.
Tips:
...
- A great way to stretch your curls for more length is to switch out the diffuser for a concentrator attachment. Put the blow dryer on medium heat or cold and concentrate the nozzle at the base of your hair. Direct the nozzle away from the scalp and hold sections of hair, gently pulling to elongate the curl counting to 5 per section.
- If you want more volume flip your head forward and diffuse upside down. Gravity will pull your hair off of your scalp allowing it to dry that way assuring your hair wont lay flat to your scalp.
- You can also use dick bill clips to clip the hair off of your scalp while it cools if you prefer a more heat free method.
- Finish it off with hairspray of you don't like to use gel. The style may not hold as well though but you can refresh the hairspray as you go. Travel size hairsprays are available to throw in your purse.
- Don't over use products containing silicone or alcohol or they could weigh your hair down and dry it out. Not enough product and your hair could frizz up halfway through the day. Start with quarter size amounts per section of hair because you can always add more.
- Avoid touching your hair to much during the process. Your fingers will disturb the curls natural pattern and add frizz.
